ag penpalThe Ag Pen Pal Program educates students about where their food, fiber and fuel comes from by creating a personal connection between a farmer and/or rancher. This is done by linking classrooms with farm and ranch families.

Farm and ranch pen pals are encouraged to write letters and emails as well as visiting with students either in person in their classroom or via Skype technology. Farmers/ranchers explain how food moves from the farm or ranch to the consumer and the importance of the interdependence between rural and urban communities.

Families come from across Nebraska and maintain a connection with their assigned classroom throughout the school year. Classroom participants come from across the state as well and are connected with others across Nebraska.

Ag Pen Pal Classrooms

Teachers who would like to participate must commit to having contact with their assigned farm or ranch pen pal at least three times during the school year: fall, winter and spring. This can be done through letters, emails, visits or Skype sessions.

Some ideas for teachers and students to include in their pen pal correspondence:

  • Ask questions about everyday life on the farm and/or ranch
  • Send photos of themselves and their classrooms
  • Send classroom projects they have made

Ag Pen Pal Farmers & Ranchers

Farmers and ranchers that would like to participate must commit to having contact with their assigned classroom at least three times during the school year: fall, winter and spring. This can be done through letters, emails, visits or Skype sessions.

In addition to writing letters and emails, some Ag Pen Pals choose to:

  • Send videos or photo of their farm or ranch
  • Send seed and fiber samples of what is grown on their farm or ranch
  • Visit their classroom.

It is not always possible to be assigned a classroom near your farm or ranch. Skype technology makes visits possible no matter where you or your classroom are located. Having interactive conversations with students is a great way to share your story. Download Skype for an online and interactive meeting with your classroom.
